“I tried that instant AI translation tool (https://labs.heygen.com/video-translate) and it's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. I gave it a 35 second video of me speaking English. And this is what I got - that's my voice! But I don't speak a word of German...” https://twitter.com/StuartJRitchie/status/1702305867993919664

“Despite dire projections of climate impacts, many aspects of human well-being are expected to improve over time. Our climate assessments need to include this context. … How can the outlook be dire but improvements also be expected? It’s because well-being (health, living standards, food security, water security, etc.) is driven by multiple factors, not just climate. Climate effects may be negative while the effects of other drivers (economic development, technology, social change, policy, etc.) may be positive and outweigh climate effects. So, for example, we expect longer lifespans even as warming causes more temperature-attributable deaths, less poverty overall even while climate change pushes some into poverty, fewer people hungry even while climate change exacerbates hunger for some.” https://rdcu.be/dlcwI [Nature]
Incredible. Just 10 years ago, I would have laughed at the idea that major political institutions could take AI extinction seriously. Not just because I wasn't convinced that AI was an extinction risk, but because I didn't expect the huge advances we've seen since then to happen so soon and so fast. This blows my mind.
