How the use of tactical nukes in Ukraine by Russia could be a positive outcome for the West:
Lots of smart left-wing people who previously refused to work on defense projects would reassess their position.
The mainstream media would become distracted for years and as a consequence spend fewer resources on fueling internal animosities and instead focus on an outside enemy.
It would lead to a massive refocus on defense and away from destructive culture war topics among the general public.
It would further weaken useless institutions like the United Nations.
Taxpayer money that might otherwise be wasted on useless or harmful projects would be allocated in support of keeping the West safe and technologically ahead of its enemies.
Strategically important companies like SpaceX would likely receive massive subsidies.
Nuclear power would get another boost as a means to become energy independent. It would also become the only viable solution to climate change since dangerous degrowth strategies would lose a lot of appeal during an arms race.
The West would again focus on getting things done rather than endless debates. Bureaucratic hurdles would be removed.
I don't desire this to happen though. It is an argument not to be afraid to the point of not helping Ukraine to win this war.
Putin wants you to think that the use of nuclear weapons would be catastrophic so that you flinch and he can get what he wants easier. What I'm saying is, bring it on, we don't fear your threats. We will support Ukraine and if you use nukes we will still win and then bankrupt you in an arms race.
In this context, the facts on the ground are less relevant than what your enemy believes that you believe. Threats are designed to alter your behavior in favor of the person making the threats. If they don't alter your behavior favorably then fewer such threats will be made in the future.
But what if Putin is not a rational player? I believe that Putin isn't as crazy as some people think. He waited until Trump is out of office to invade Ukraine because he knew that Trump's narcissistic personality would be dangerous for him. Trump would have ignored threats and would have reacted explosively to any humiliation by Putin.
In any case, even if the bully is really going to punch you if you don't give him your meal, giving him your meal without a fight is not an option. Once people notice that you are a victim you will lose everything. You reduce the risk by signaling that the price tag of taking your meal is getting hurt.
You neglect to say what our military response should be to such use of tactical nuclear weapons. What do you propose?
